Jebel Akhdar: >> Discovering Omans vast Mountainous Landscape

Jebel Akhdar, meaning "Green Mountain," is one of Oman’s most breathtaking natural wonders, located in the Al Hajar mountain range. Known for its terraced farms, cool climate, and striking landscapes, it offers a sharp contrast to the arid deserts of the region. The mountain is home to a rich diversity of flora, including orchards of pomegranates, roses, and walnuts, which thrive in the high-altitude environment. The area is not only famous for its lush greenery but also for its deep valleys, dramatic cliffs, and panoramic views that stretch across the desert plains below.

Jebel Akhdar is accessible by car, and located approximately a 2 to 3-hour from Muscat. The most common route is via the Nizwa road (Route 21), passing through the town of Birkat Al Mouz. From here, you’ll follow the road that leads up into the mountains, where the climb becomes steeper and more winding. The final stretch to Jebel Akhdar requires a 4x4 vehicle, with a police checkpoint assessing the suitability of your car. There is a car park should you require to arrange transport to your accommodation if your car is not suitable for the drive. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with cooler temperatures and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

There is a myriad of activities in Jebel Akhdar. You can relax and take in the fresh mountain air and stunning scenery in of the many luxury resorts, or explore the many hiking trails scattered throughout the area. Many of them are accessible with your own vehicle, however many of the trails require a local guide which you can book through your resort. On our visit we opted to take in the breathtaking scenery, enjoy a bit of downtime and complete an accessible hike without the need of a guide.
